Marking World Cancer Day on Tuesday, the International Agency for Research on Cancer issued the World Cancer Report 2014 which stresses that the cancer burden is mounting at an alarming pace.
New cancer cases worldwide are expected to rise from 14 million to 22 million per year within the next two decades, and annual cancer deaths to rise from 8.2 million to 13 million.
“More commitment to prevention and early detection is desperately needed in order to complement improved treatments and address the alarming rise in the cancer burden,” said Dr. Christopher Wild, Director of IARC.

It also found that 8.2 million people died from cancer globally in 2012, including 40,000 Australians but 3.7 million cancer deaths could have been avoided by lifestyle changes including quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and reducing alcohol intake.
